Transport Routing Engine (TRE) - the engine you embed and control

A routing engine for advanced and customer-specific route calculation, embedded in your own solution and running on your own network data and your own rules. Part of Triona's Infra Data Management Solution.

Why

Why TRE?

TRE is a configurable routing engine. The properties of the vehicle and the restrictions carried in the network data decide which roads a route may use, and you can add rules of your own to the calculation.

TRE is the routing engine used in Triona's own route calculation. It is delivered as a component you embed in your own solution and host where you need it, including on your own premises.

  • Customized routing - the engine is configured to the restrictions and the rules you work under
  • Safer routes - the vehicle is sent only where its weight and height are allowed
  • Runs on the data you decide - TNE, OpenStreetMap or file input, including national road data from Sweden, Norway and Finland
  • Yours to host - a component in your own solution, on your own infrastructure
  • Vehicle types and networks - configured for pedestrians, bicycles, motor vehicles, trucks and other heavy goods vehicles. It can also be used for routing in waterway and railway networks

Features

What you can ask TRE for

  • Point to point, with via points

A to B with any number of via points, returning up to three alternatives with distance and travel time.

  • One to many, as a distance matrix

A distance matrix from one source to many destinations, or the other way round.

  • Customized routing per vehicle

Routes filtered on the vehicle's height, length, width and weight.

  • Instructions and restrictions

Textual driving instructions, plus speed limits, height restrictions and toll stations along the route.

  • Energy consumption and climate impact

TRE predicts the energy consumption of the route from the vehicle and the characteristics of the road. With fuel-specific emission factors, that becomes the CO2 emission of the route.

  • Walking and cycling on an energy model

A separate energy model for bicycles and pedestrians uses height information in the network. It supports relaxed, normal and strong cyclists, and it can route across open surfaces where the data holds no links.

Challenge

Generic routing does not know your restrictions

A public routing service is built for the public network and an average vehicle. It cannot read the data you maintain, and it cannot be told about a rule that applies only to you.

So someone checks the route by hand before it is used, and keeps a private list of roads to avoid. The distance gets corrected afterwards.

  • Routes the vehicle cannot legally or physically drive.
  • Distances that do not match the route taken.
  • Rules kept in someone's head rather than in the system.
  • No way to define areas that must not be routed through.

Solution

How TRE fits into your solution

TRE is an engine you embed. You choose the data, the rules, the interface and the hosting.

  • Point it at your data

TRE runs on a TNE database you maintain yourself, on OpenStreetMap, or on file input such as shape and GeoPackage files. It reads the national road databases in Sweden and Norway (NVDB) and in Finland (Digiroad). Datasets can be merged, so a route can cross a border.

  • Configure the restrictions

The network is filtered per request on vehicle properties, and rules of your own can be added to the calculation.

  • Integrate and run it

The engine is embedded in your own solution and runs where that solution runs. Your system calls it over a documented interface, and when many routes have to be calculated at once they can be submitted as a file.

Who is it for?

Built for operations that cannot use a generic route

  • PUBLIC TRANSPORT

    Travel planners and transport authorities

Travel planning solutions for public transport, where TRE already calculates the routes in several European countries.

  • INDUSTRY

    Transport and industrial operations

Transport companies and the forest industry, optimizing flows of goods where the route has to suit the vehicle and the distance has to be the one actually driven.

  • LOCAL

    Municipalities and road owners

Municipalities routing on their own network data, for vehicles as well as for cyclists and pedestrians.

  • PARTNERS

    Solution providers

Solution providers embedding route calculation in their own product, and hosting it themselves or for their customer.
