Case

The Swedish Forest Industries gather information about protected forest on the web

The map in the web application shows voluntarily set-aside forest for most of the major forest owners in Sweden. The map also shows the formal forms of protection by the state. The map is interactive and can be filtered on different criteria such as organization and protection class.

The Challenge

Sweden’s largest forest owners have for a long time worked to protect biological diversity. Thousands of areas have been excluded from deforestation in order to protect ancient trees, dead wood, deciduous forest, and wetlands. In total about 25% of Swedish forests are excluded through formal or voluntary measures. However, the challenge has been a lack of a comprehensive and easily accessible presentation of where these areas are located. This has made it difficult for politicians, researchers, and the general public to get a clear overall view.

The Solution

In 2018 Triona developed a common map application which gathered all information in one place. The map shows both voluntary set-aside and formally protected areas such as national parks, nature reserves, and biotope protection areas.

“This is one of our most important solutions. It must work without disruption and Triona has delivered exactly what we need. The collaboration is excellent.”
Linda Eriksson, Swedish Forest Industries

The map is regularly updated with new data and during 2025 the application together with under-the-hood functionality and security has also undergone a substantial update.

The Result

The launch of the newly improved map was very well received. There is now a clear and accessible overview for all involved or interested in forest protection. Today the content and voluntarily set-aside forest from Sveaskog, Holmen Skog, SCA Skog, Bergvik Skog Öst, Kopparfors Skogar, Church of Sweden and the National Property Board is included in the map as well as formally protected land areas.
