TNE Editor helps Biometria streamline the update of their forest truck road data
In Sweden there are over 200,000 km of forest roads, which is a prerequisite to be able to run an efficient forestry management and transport the harvested roundwood out of the forest. Information about forest roads, together with public, municipal, and other private roads is stored in the National Road Database (NVDB). The Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) is responsible for the NVDB, where road data is both updated and retrieved by different actors who need this road data for planning of transports, navigation, road maintenance etc.
Biometria’s challenge
Biometria, a member-owned company active in the forest industry, is responsible for coordinating forest road data in Sweden. The road data updates were previously sent to Trafikverket for manual processing and updating to the NVDB. This meant a considerable amount of work at Trafikverket and delayed access to current data for users, which negatively affected everything from transport planning to road maintenance.
Triona’s solution
To reduce lead times and increase control of the data quality Biometria started to use TNE Editor, a tool for direct editing and check in of road network data in the NVDB.
TNE Editor allows Biometria to:
- Independently make updates to the NVDB with direct check-ins.
- Reduce errors by eliminating the need for interpretation by external parties.
- Create road network data and properties based on uploaded GPS location and field data direct from inventories.
- Review and validate changes to ensure that the data complies with the NVDB’s rules.
“Using TNE Editor streamlines our maintenance of forest truck road data. We can now carry out updates and reclassifications with direct check-in to the NVDB by ourselves, which considerably reduces the time until users can access correct data. This is crucial in order to achieve increased quality in our transport planning and for planning of forest road maintenance, which in turn benefits the whole forest industry.”
Lars-Erik Jönsson, Service manager for transport at Biometria
The result
Faster updates: Changes are available in the NVDB and services such as Krönt Vägval already by the next day.
Streamlined workflow: Less duplication of work and increased data quality
Better planning: Forest workers get access to correct road data in real time, which improves both transport and maintenance planning.
Customer: Biometria
Industry: Forest industry, Infrastructure
Problem: Long lead times and delayed access to current data for users.
Solution: Using TNE Editor enables Biometria to update forest road data to the NVDB by themselves, which gives immediate access to current data, thus streamlining working practices both for Biometria and Trafikverket.
