Triona updates map in protected forest application

25 September 2024

The Swedish Forest Industries tasked Triona with the assignment of making the annual update to the map showing voluntary set-aside and protected forest.

The map provides an overview of the voluntary set-aside forest owned by many of the major forest owners in Sweden. The map is interactive and can be filtered on several different parameters such as organisation and protection class.

The map has been produced in cooperation with several of the larger forest owners in Sweden.

  • Holmen Skog
  • SCA Skog
  • Sveaskog
  • Bergvik Skog Öst
  • Kopparfors Skogar
  • Church of Sweden
  • The National Property Board

Protected forest areas and the landowners’ conditions change, and the map therefore needs to be regularly updated. Triona therefore contacts the forest owners who send their latest map data. The data is compiled and managed by our GIS experts in FME (Feature Manipulation Engine), a tool which helps to compile and process large amounts of data in a resource-efficient way, before it is published on the Swedish Forest industries’ website.

An important dialogue is held between Triona’s GIS experts and the Swedish Forest industries regarding the definition of different protections as well as how the data is displayed and labeled, to ensure that the map is as accurate as possible.

If you want to have a closer look at the map and its features you can find it on the Swedish Forest Industries’ website here.

It is especially rewarding for us at Triona to be able to combine our great interest for the forest with our knowledge of GIS, because they are prioritized areas for us. Feel free to read more about how we work together with the forest industry.

We look forward to the next update of the protected forest and continuing interesting discussions with the Swedish Forest Industries and the forest owners.
