The Swedish Forest Industries gather information about protected forest on the web

19 February 2026

Sweden’s largest forest owners have for a long time worked to protect biological diversity. Thousands of areas have been excluded from deforestation in order to protect ancient trees, dead wood, deciduous forest, and wetlands. In total about 25% of Swedish forests are excluded through formal or voluntary measures.

However, the challenge has been a lack of a comprehensive and easily accessible presentation of where these areas are located. This has made it difficult for politicians, researchers, and the general public to get a clear overall view.

In 2018 Triona developed a common map application which gathered all information in one place. The map shows both voluntary set-aside and formally protected areas such as national parks, nature reserves, and biotope protection areas.
